Statement by Andrew Stevenson, Secretary, at the October 19, 2019 press conference in Belfast, Maine
Good morning, everyone. Thank you for coming out to join us for the creation of the Harriet L. Hartley conservation area and the formation of the Friends of Harriet L. Hartley conservation area.
There is much that could be said about the lovely bay behind us, its shoreline, its intertidal zone, and the challenges facing those of us who want to see the bay and its watersheds protected. We have four people here this morning to speak briefly about different aspects of that intertidal zone, its significance, and the importance of what we are going to do as soon as this press conference concludes.
Our speakers will be brief, allowing plenty of time for members of the press to ask questions. Copies of their statements are available. I know that each of them would be pleased to speak with anyone from the press afterwards. “Friends” president, Sid Block, will speak first. Ellie Daniels, our Treasurer will be second, Vice President Paul Bernacki will be third, and Jeffrey Mabee – one of the owners of the Little River Center and its intertidal zone – will be fourth.
Once the conference is over, Jeffrey and his partner, Judith Grace, invite everyone to walk along the shoreline and view the intertidal area. Picture-taking is encouraged. If you decide to leave the shoreline and walk along the intertidal area, please walk carefully and mindfully across the flats.
